Wow.
Six months since my last blog on expojah.
I've got to write more often.
There have been a few posts on facebook.
But it may be safer to post here.
Particularly if i'm ranting on topics of dissent.
Keep your ear to the ground.

Sunday, January 18

Well the popularity of the blog has plummeted and facebook is doing the speaking for us. But as YouTube and the rest show how money-hungry they are there's no escaping the ads that are becoming more invasive by the month. If i had the smarts i would start developing the liberator. I see the online social network becoming a decentralised version of facebook, with independent blogs making a comeback and an aesthetically pleasing RSS feed app bringing it all together, ad-free! And a solution that could replace traditional email, without requiring an account with any site, eradicating spam.

Anyway, although i have fallen for the facebook/twitter-style status update over the more comprehensive blog, this site will remain my online domain. If and when i put more effort into its upkeep it may become worth frequenting. Bonus is this will remain an ad-free domain with no ads plastered on the bottom of every email i send. Pretty rare these days, no?

So... another blog beginning with 'so'.

Arrived in Melbourne early last week from Canberra. Been staying with Keegan and Jase, close enough to the city that there are trams running outside. Haven't seen these guys in a year or more, but they've been well hospitable so i already look forward to seeing them next time i hit Melbourne.

I've also seen Beth (friend from work) and Bronni (KYLC 2002), tomorrow i might catch up with Ivy (from the hostel in May) for a second time and then Monday i'll have lunch with Clarebear (from the hostel under my management) and go out in the morning with Holly (long-time internet buddy) before heading home via Canberra.

After xmas it's off to Newcastle to hang with Andrew (hostel) and Lara (TAFE 2004-05) and then i'll take up residence with Luke and Ross (church).

What i'm looking forward is getting some work - i've been unemployed for 3 months already - seeing more of my mates and making some new ones, jamming with Simon (TAFE) and having a bedroom, maybe with a desk and somewhere i can hang my clothes, and a kitchen etc: the luxuries i went without in 2008.

Thursday, December 4

Holly (after exam on the 17th)
Keegan, Jase and Beth
Ivy (back from Tas on the 17th)

Chiu-hsiang.. I might go to Melbourne in November-December. Can you give me your mobile number or email? I'd love to meet you there.

If I'm there I also gotta catch up with Holly. And Clarebear. And whoever else is down then.. let me know :)

Before then I'll be stopping in with Gav and Ineke. I'll be leaving Brisbane in about a week, with one (maybe two) more trip up here to collect vehicles in the following weeks. And then some hanging around back home before Canberra. Joyous!

Wednesday, October 8

It's Jerry Time

Wednesday, October 1

So here's the plan.
Current: Stay with Ry and Ky.
Sunday: Be Ry and Ky's best man.
October: Housesit for Ry and Ky.
November: Visit and crash lots of people through New South.
December: Canberra with Gav and Ineke. Melbourne.

Wednesday, September 17

Finally i've escaped Bundaberg! Drove to Brisbane yesterday, and Ryan has asked me to be the best man for his marriage to Kylie :) So i'll be around here for 18 days minimum, maybe up to 5 weeks. Should buy me time to sell the Echo and the Combo, while my mate Gavin buys the Blue Beast. Next time i buy a car it will be to replace the Hiace, not to rebuild my collection.

Saturday, September 6

Wholly crap.

I've been in Bundaberg for six months now. And I alone worked at the hostel 24/7 for 104 days straight. What an insane experience. m'Exhausted. Feels like I've just come home from one big - really big - shift. It's gonna take a week or more of pure chillaxin before I can fully be recovered.

The olds are coming up Monday-Tuesday to see the area and have vacation for a week in Brisvegas. I gotta hang around for a bit to offload my vending machine, sell 2 or 3 of my cars - and vow never to own more than two again. Gonna stay at the farm again tonight and at Otto's Sunday, and it looks like Cell Block are gonna put my folks up for a night or two for nicks. I gotta get rid of some of my shit and live on the road again. It'll be Brisbane for a week or more, down to Sydney maybe alone, maybe not. Canberra soon, Woy Woy/Gosford for a while, and try to catch up on that holiday i was meant to be having.

I'll catch you soon!

Tuesday, May 27

After spending roughly 12 weeks staying at the hostel, I worked my way up to being first in line to take over as the manager. I am now employed to check in backpackers, plan rosters for the work our farmers have demand for, and general running of the hostel. The night of Wednesday 21st I took over and had two full days of chaos. The general duties I've got downpat, but have had to deal with inspections by the fire department, kicking a fella out who has been living here with us for quite some time, chasing up people's pay, fumigating rooms for bed bugs, buying 80 sets of knifes, forks, spoons, bowls, plates and mugs, picking people up from the bus station at 11pm and getting up at five to see everybody gets up for work. Our bus is in for repair and two of our vans have been unusable so I've had to ship 60 people off to work on five farms using one van and whoever else's wheels i could find. Hectic as.

So I'm living on-site, working 7 days a week, staying with a group of 60 backpackers, and currently only 2 other Aussies which seems to be the best way to keep things. The Aussies prove themselves to be the most troublesome. Haven't had much time to think thus far, but things look to be quieting down, so most days should run smooth. Important thing is everything I'm meant to be doing is getting done right. And the backpackers are friendly and the farmers and bosses are easy. Plus free accommodation, petrol, internet, rates... Really enjoying the responsibility.

Monday, May 19

Yep, news is official. I am now taking over as the manager of backpackers. It's gonna be a crazy ride!

Wednesday, May 14

okay, nine weeks ago. and it may be a whole lot longer - big things coming up, i'll know within a few days...

so while i leave you in suspense as to the future, i shall speak of the past. work has been mandarins and pineapples. have made some pretty super friends, many of whom have again already left. first weekend of this month i took a trip to brisbane to see rach for her birthday, for two nights. had to take a mate to royal brisbane hospital again the next weekend for a grand total of 26 hours, though i should get fuel reimbursed by the hospital. one fight, resulting in six visits to hospital (i lost count). gave blood, sat in on a Hilux test drive, bought half a new wardrobe and more hats than one head can wear.

started reading a karin slaughter novel. given non-fiction a break for a while. update will come in a week, swear.

Sunday, April 13

I arrived at the hostel six weeks ago, and now practically everyone who was here then has moved on and been replaced by newbies. All the folks from the photo below are gone. A few Canucks and Germans remain. A crazy group of Swedish girls have come by, who I've been out with a couple nights. There are new interim managers, who are buying new couches to deal with the bed bugs in our TV room. Gym is set up out back. Might even get internet there soon, but there's open access here at the park across the rail anyway.

Worked on mandarins for a few days after getting back from Cairns and Brisbane. Not as much earnings with them, but much better tucker than lemons. I suppose those extended mandarin breaks are the primary reason we didn't pick as much - or the reason not as much fruit reached the crates.

Got a bunch more piccies to go through, borrowed from other ppls cameras, which I might make a collage of, maybe next weekend, or when there's not work. Prolly going for a 5 day week on lemons and I'm driving a van load out to the farm.

Just chillin. It's what we do.

Thursday, April 3

Well, I called the boss and said I ain't coming back. And thus ends 8+ years of employment.
I've come back south, via Mackay and now to Brisbane to deliver some furniture for Rach. So I stayed at Bek and Paul's again and got to see Loz and her man Simon. Stopped for one night at Home Hill and met a masseur named Harry and popped in at the hostel, where I'll head back for more work tomorrow. To Bundaberg!

Sunday, March 30

Sunday now. On Friday I spent the day with Jess in Cairns, mostly swimming at the lagoon. That girl's good value, and the city ain't half bad. Ah, shenanigans. Got back to El Arish after sundown and yesterday drove back up past Cairns and up to Port Douglas and walked through Mossman Gorge. What a drive that is! Miles and miles of nothing but beach. Animal life there included a wild bore (scared the pants off me), and where I parked last night at QLD13 Japoonvale, I discovered a stowaway hidden in my back door and was treated to a private display of fireflies.

Thursday, March 27

Taken the last couple days pretty easy. Gotta wait til tomorrow to meet up with Jess, so last night at QLD016 El Arish Rest Area, which was a rather nice temperature for sitting in the van with the doors open past dusk. In the morning I discovered a pie van parked conveniently a few yards from me, so breakfast included a steak and pea pie. I took a trot down the embankment to the creek passing by and fed bread to the fish, turtles and eels happily swimming in the crocodile inhabited waters. The pie man told me there was a rather large croc found one time stretched out right where I'd parked. I've only come about 80km today, passing through Japoonvale to Innisvale, which is the nicest part of Queensland that I've found, in my opinion. Much like the landscape of NSW's North Coast. Still morning, I found my resting place for tonight, QLD009 Babinda Rest Area, where I've spent 3-4 hours on the phone, some time reading and just generally taking it easy.

Image today is one of my stowaways

Finished reading Richard Dawkins' The God Delusion. Dawkins was a name mentioned in the last book I read on Intelligent Design v Evolution. To write briefly on the books, Intelligent Design was presented as - as it is intended - a science. Aware though I am that Dawkins' works are many, The God Delusion does not promote the atheistic viewpoint through use of science. Rather it is a philosophical argument, that religion is, in its very nature, a dangerous thing. Once again, not a scientific refutation of the claims of the ID movement. To decry religion he uses arguments that I mostly feel no need to defend. Like atrocities performed in the name of religions, Christianity included, that in no way represent my own understanding of faith or how it ought be practiced.

Tuesday, March 25

I left the hostel Sunday afternoon and stopped for the night at QLD122 Calliope River Rest Area at the Driver Reviver. In the morning I took advantage of the shade until it disappeared, reading more of Dawkins' The God Delusion then headed north once more. Rachie's sister and bro-in-law who are still living in Mackay graciously let me crash there last night. Now I've come through Airlie Beach, Townsville, to QLD37 Saunders Beach. Tomorrow Jessica's plane flies overhead, likely to beat me to Cairns.

Today's picture is some of the hooligans from the hostel. Note one (of the three current) black eye and two shaven eyebrows.

Thursday, March 6

At the library just now I ran into Anke and Werner, the German couple who I met at the rest area at Crooked Creek three weeks ago. Small world.

This library is at Bundaberg, where I've found some work. Main reason for taking this line is that I'm in Queensland between two events. Event 1 was visiting Rach in Mackay - a visit that I did not want to overstay, as much as I would have loved to. Even 2 is dropping in on Jess's vacation to Cairns. So I've postponed the 1000k trip and scored some work for the interim.

I'm staying at a working hostel with a bunch of Germans, French, Canucks, French Canadians, Poms, some Aussies and more, where I arrived Friday night. Of course, I'm stuck sharing a room with a freakin Westie. I'm working on an orchard, leming pickon, and getting the flesh torn from my arms. Pictures to come. At $90 a bin, that could score me a grand a week if I work hard. That's twice the Kmart wage, and at least twice the fun.

Last night there was a little rain, so we can't pick today as the fruit damages easily when wet. That's fine by me, coz I needed an hour to fix my laptop charger, which started smoking last time I used it...
Screwdriver ..check
Hammer ..check
Stanley knife ..check
Leccy ..check
Gaff ..check
Mission accomplished.

Tomorrow oughta be a kickarse day on the farm. Leaving the fruit another night will make tomorrow's pickins good and plenty. Two, maybe two and a half bins... if I don't spend that many hours on the mobile instead.

MSN port seems to be blocked in this library, so hopefully there's somewhere around the hostel I can get online - not that I've had much time or desire to get ol' Lappy out. Just hangin at the hostel.

Wednesday, February 27

I must resist the urge to overstay my welcome here. Crashing with Rach and her family-flatmates has been the most relaxing time. I feel I could easily drop the trip to settle down some place like this. But that's not what this trip is about, as such. Relaxing, yes. Settling down requires dollars. Dollars are earned for relinquishing freedom. I'd rather own nothing than to not own myself.

Jess is coming up to Cairns in four weeks. Four weeks is a long time to wait, but I'm passing up no opportunities to extend friendships. Meantime I'll see where I can find work. Short-term. Feb 1st was my last day at my regular jobs. It [unnecessarily] took me over a week to get on the road, and [unbelievably] that was now over two weeks ago. Time can and will vanish before your eyes.

Saturday, February 23

This pic I took at an art gallery off the road somewhere along the way. It's a little artisan's village that started as the location where this fella built the chapel for his daughter's wedding. This piece was made from iodised pill packets and a sheet of stainless steel. This morning I've taken off and reached Mackay to see Rach. Should be here a few days.

Thursday, February 21

36L at 267622. $43.
Taking off from my hosts' house in Ferny Hills, I dropped Ryan into Brisbane and continued north through Gympie and I spent some time and lunch money at the Buderim ginger factory and neighbouring macadamia hut. $12.50. Talk of severe weather in the south east held me up a day longer than I had intended to stay in Brisbane, yet there's nothing in sight. Warm and dry.

Dinner last night was a meal at the pub at Tiaro with the bartender and no more than 6 others in sight. $16.50 and a drink $2.50. NSW154. From there this morning I've been powering up through Maryborough, Childers, Bundaberg and Bargara to Gladstone and Rockhampton. 50L petrol at 268111, 489km. There's a bit of fruit picking around Bundaberg, though in this weather it would kill me. Winter harvesting is the better option. I dropped by Sweet Water Hill winery for a taste and bought a chardonnay cleanskin $8 and a bottle of port $16. Had a shower in their facilities as well so I threw in $2 for gas.

Monday, February 18

On NSW time it's half past midnight now, but 11:30 here in Brisbane. It's Ly staying with Ry and Ky and baby Ty, who have graciously invited me to stay as long as I please. And I feel welcome enough to accept. It's good to kick back and keep my feet off the road for a while. I guess I've been pushing to get up to Mackay; seeing Rach the first and only definite objective of the Queensland leg of Journey '08. Really oughta be sleeping about now. Gonna take Ryan to work at 5:30 and explore the local area. Chicken and chips $6. Aldi $18.65. Hooks to hang the bed up off the floor $1.25. Laundry detergent $2.

Sunday, February 17

33.3L refill after 333km (267,338). $43.33.
Now on Queensland land. Yesterday morning I slept til 9:00. That has to stop. Went for a walk for an hour in the bush past the camping spot before talking with Riven and a Norwegian couple for a short while, then I took off for Kyogle to meet my great uncle Bill for the first time. What a champion. At 70 he took off around the country like I am now, for over two years. Then the Lord provided him with a beautiful two-bedroom house on picturesque 30-something acres. I stayed with him overnight, but felt like I could have stayed in the area until I too was 79. This morning I went for another walk to the back of his property and waded in the creek at his boundary. At lunch I took off and drove across the border into Queensland. Along the way, bought some lime and ginger jam $5, 3L of juices $6 and from a highway-side stand, a sausage and egg roll with ginger ale $6. Didn't even get out of the car. Staying tonight in QLD703, Fassifern Memorial Reserve.

Friday, February 15

brr it was cold this morning! Made some breakfast at the park (see pic) and trekked the 60km to Glen Innes. With laptop by my side I drove around town slowly until I found an open wireless internet connection (Bundy) adjacent to the Holden dealership. Needless to say, I've spent a few hours since then checking emails and updating the blog. Prawn chow mein $7. Seems like there's a lot to see in this little town.

30L refill for 264km at 267,005km. $41.
Driving through Tenterfield proved to be even easier to find an open broadband connection. Now though, I'm somewhere between Sandy Hill and Drake, on the Bruxner Hwy, over in a rather nice secluded rest area. For the first time on my journey there are other campers with me. One fella named Riven is parked nearby by himself in an enormous Outback fifth wheel. A house, basically. Glen Innes was a real nice spot. Easy to see why the Scots settled there. At Deepwater I pulled in at the bakery and started a bread and pastry binge. $10.20. Stayed at NSW221, Crooked Creek Rest Area, near Drake.

Thursday, February 14

266,776km (44L refill after 392km). $62.
I got kicked out of Kmart Armidale.
Before I could walk in the door I was greeted by a young lady, playfully selling the store's last Val's Day plush dog. She kept me probably 10 minutes before I could find an opportunity to politely venture further into the store, at every chance pointing out any hint of sexual suggestiveness in our conversation. I had been commenting on how genuinely friendly the locals are, as compared with the Woy Woy centre. Alas, eventually another worker came to move me along. "Bosses orders." I guess that contrast says something about the nature of the business. Optus recharge $47.50.
Last night Aunty Mary served up the same dish she has been cooking for as long as I have known her, undoubtedly longer. Silverside with veg. And this morning porridge. I dropped her in town this morning and was amazed how at 93 years of age she boarded the passenger seat of my van with no more difficulty than any younger person of her short stature.
I returned a call from Rachie at 10am and took my clothes to the laundrette to be dried. $3.20. I read a little more of Richard Dawkins' The God Delusion while there and ate a small quiche. $4. From there I drove 20kms or so to Uncle Jeffrey's dairy farm on Nash's Rd. I stayed there for a few hours seeing how he does things. The property is a hilly, mostly cleared 180 acres with currently 77 head of cattle. Heifers, and one bull. Plus a few calves, one only a day old. His milk vat holds up to 400 gallons, of which he is currently taking around 1400L from every two days' milking at 49c/L. Not a bad income there, but then there's the first expense of feeding the cattle, at $500 a tonne of pellets which will last three weeks. He drove me around the property in the tractor for a while before I headed on to Armidale. Had a Pad See Ew, though it was no match for the meal I shared with Kate at Tuggerah on the Thursday before I left. $9.50. I'm now parked for the night at some reserve called Mother of Ducks, in Guyra.

Wednesday, February 13

Now the days are seeming to pass quicker. Sleeping outside the truck stop last night turned out to be more pleasant that I'd envisaged. Again I emerged from the sleeping bag around 8am and meandered for the best of an hour. I set the course for Bellingen but came across a sign to Hungry Head.
And I said to myself,
"I have to go to Hungry Head."
With a name like that, who could resist? So I pulled in and stopped for a bit at Urunga. I hit the Dorrigo area not long into the afternoon. Rather than rock up to Aunty Mary's too early I took the scenic route to the Never Never rest area. This took me a few miles through dense rainforest and over a grid, apparently now onto somebody's property where I had to steer around some cattle on the road. Or did they steer around me? (pun-cha!) At the rest area I pulled out the gas burner and gnocced up some pasta à la Leggos. Being now in the middle of dense rainforest I became wary of leeches. It may have been at this spot that I spotted one on Mum's leg a few years back. Checking myself over I flicked one off my arm and saw one seemingly burrowing through my pants, so I dropped trou post-haste. Who knows what these creatures are capable of? I pulled into Dorrigo town and up to Aunty Mary's two hours ago. Uncle Jeffrey Gentle was up from the farm visiting his mum when I arrived. I decided to take a walk into town to check out the price of real estate in the area. One fella said g'day and commented of my Rancid windbreaker, "Sick jacket!" There's a bloke walking by now, who looks strangely like a straw scarecrow, and he's stopped not far from my back window. Odd... Anyway, while I was out I grabbed a slice of carrot cake and walked back. $2.30. This really would be a nice area to live. Loads of highland country town character.

Tuesday, February 12

Marge, Marge, the rains are 'ere!
The skies are so juicy they're bursting with flavour.

14:15

526km down. Up.
This morning again I've gone off the beaten track. And wondered of the irony why the beaten track is much more smooth than the roads less travelled. Took these two detours to visit local wineries. One wasn't opening for an hour and a half. The second wasn't opening til Wednesday. At Kew, I couldn't go past a meal of two fried eggs on two slices of toast for $2. Now having roast chicken with vegetables. $7.

19:08

103km from refill (49L at 266,338km). $69
The weather all day has been pretty gloomy. And according to the lady who owns one of the wineries around Kempsey, this sort of weather has caused a third year of next to no pickins for the grape growers. I'm now pulled in at a roadhouse in Clybucca for dinner and a place to rest the man and his van for the night. $12. Tomorrow I have a destination: Aunty Mary's at Dorrigo by 3pm.
